McDonald’s has announced that it will install fast chargers for electric vehicles in its restaurants’ car parks in Spain, thanks to an agreement with Iberdrola and Endesa X.

McDonald’s currently has 46 charging points installed and more than 90 more in the pipeline. The company plans to continue with these installations and exceed 150 charging points by the end of 2021.

The project is based on fast chargers, ranging from 25 kilowatts (kW), 50 kW and 150 kW, to ultra-fast 350 kW chargers, of which there are very few in Spain. Consequently, on average, in approximately half an hour, a user could charge up to 80% of their vehicle’s battery at McDonald’s.

The company also aims to promote the use of electric cars among all users and, for this reason, offers this service, with no obligation to consume in the restaurant, to anyone who approaches the car parks where it is available,
In this respect, McDonald’s stresses that each installation will require a significant investment of around 80,000 euros.

This initiative forms part of the company’s sustainability commitments and, at the same time, is part of the “Happy Change” collaborative movement, which McDonald’s presented a year ago and which it continues to promote with different initiatives, including the installation of electric car charging stations.

In terms of energy, McDonald’s has been implementing energy efficiency measures for more than a decade. Since 2007, the company has designed its restaurants to incorporate energy-efficient construction measures and installations in all aspects of cooking equipment, lighting and air conditioning.

In addition, since 2009, McDonald’s has been monitoring its restaurants’ electricity consumption, installing programmable automation systems capable of optimising energy use.

In this sense, more than 95% of its restaurants are currently powered by renewable energy, as well as its corporate offices and the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
