Renfe has set 23 June as the new date for the start of operations of its ‘low cost’ train, Avlo, with tickets at five euros, which the company put on sale from 26 January for the next three weeks.

In this way, Renfe is relaunching its service after it was forced to suspend its debut last year due to the pandemic. The company’s strategy is aggressive, as it will be selling tickets for five euros over the next few weeks for travel between June and December. However, this is the same price at which it began selling tickets last year before it had to delay the service.

However, on this occasion, the company does not specify whether there will be a limit on the number of tickets at five euros, unlike last time, when it launched 10,000 tickets at that price, although it does specify that the promotion will run until next 14 February.

Similarly, as the board of directors recently discussed at its latest meeting, users who bought one of the tickets a year ago and received a promotional code will also be able to redeem it from 26 January.
Registered Avlo customers and loyal Renfe customers who received a five-euro promotional code on Three Kings Day as a gift from the operator will also be able to redeem this code to purchase a new Avlo ticket.

The service will have stops in all the cities of Renfe’s Northeast Corredor, including Guadalajara, Calatayud, Zaragoza, Lleida, Tarragona, Girona and Figueres. The frequency will initially be four trains a day, which can be extended throughout the year depending on demand and the health crisis’s evolution.

Renfe and Ouigo will compete directly on this route, with Ilsa due to make its debut in 2022, although Ouigo only has stops in Zaragoza, Tarragona and Barcelona. On the other hand, Ouigo will have a cafeteria and Avlo will not, although it will have vending machines.
Both companies will charge for Wifi, extra luggage, specific seats or flexibility to cancel. Avlo’s pricing last year was 10 euros for extra luggage, 8 euros for cancellation and 8 euros for seat selection. Ouigo offers a 9-euro plan for seat selection, additional baggage and entertainment service.

Renfe assures that the new product will start with the corresponding certifications in terms of sanitation, disinfection and cleanliness. The first Avlo trains have protocols certified by Aenor and SGS.
