According to real estate transaction data from the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma), and consulted by Europa Press, sales in Spain by foreigners (residents and non-residents) grew by 171% in the first quarter of the year, up to 31,711 operations, compared to 18,521 registered in the same period of 2021.

Transactions carried out by resident foreigners reached 16,691, 35.9% more than between January and March 2021, while home sales by non-resident foreigners increased by 140.6%, to 15,020 operations, from the 6,242 of the previous year.

The autonomous communities in which the sale of homes by foreign residents has grown the most in the first quarter were Canarias, with an increase of 75.81% and 1,083 operations, followed by Extremadura, with 107 operations, 50.7% more than between January and March 2021, and Asturias, with 185 operations, that is, 49.2% more than a year ago.

The only two decreases compared to 2021 occurred in Navarra, where the sale of housing by non-resident foreigners fell by 2.89%, to 168 operations in the first three months of this year, and in La Rioja, where a slight decrease of 0.76% was registered, up to 129 sales.

On the other hand, the autonomous community in which the sale of homes by non-resident foreigners increased the most was Castilla-La Mancha, which went from 5 operations in the first quarter of 2021 to 138 in the same period this year, a 2,660% more. Of those 138 purchases, 130 were in Toledo, 5 in Cuenca, 2 in Albacete and 1 in Guadalajara.

After Castilla-La Mancha, non-resident foreigners also focused on La Rioja, the Valencian Community and Andalucía for the sale of homes. This type of operation grew by 300% in La Rioja, with 4 operations in the first three months of 2022. In the Valencian Community, it went from 2,110 sales in the first quarter of 2021 to 5,481 in this one, 159.76% more, in particular in Alicante. In Andalucía, the year-on-year rise in the first quarter was 136.28%, with 3,875 operations in 2022.
