For this reason, since the start of the lockdown in 2020, more and more Argentinians have decided to emigrate to more stable places to work and settle, and one of the most popular destinations has been Spain (25.65%), followed by the United States (21.24%) and Chile (7.18%).

To work in Spain you need a work visa or a Spanish passport. All Argentinians can legally stay in Spanish territory for 90 days without any special documentation, but once this period is over, they must leave the country.

It is important to know that having an EU passport (not Spanish) does not automatically make you a resident. Therefore, if you want to live and work in Spain, you must obtain a residence permit. All citizens of the European Union and their families can set their residence in any of the States that are part of the European Economic Area Agreement. This is called the “Certificate of Registration of a Citizen of the European Union” (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión Europea). The steps to follow are:

Registration with the local council (Empadronamiento)

This procedure must be carried out at the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) of the city where you choose to live. This document is used to register your official address for correspondence, and this address will determine at which Foreigners Office (Oficina de Extranjería) you will have to submit your documents.

Allocation of NIE – Foreigner Identification Number

Every foreigner residing in Spain is required to obtain an NIE number. Requirements:

Photocopy of the employment contract in Spain.

Authorisation for temporary residence and work as an employee (por cuenta ajena) processed by the employer in Spain.

Original and photocopy of all pages of your passport, which must be valid for at least four months or, if the work authorisation is for less than 180 days, valid for the entire authorised stay.

Original and photocopy of your DNI (Argentinian ID), with legal residence and address within the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Spain in Buenos Aires (Guido 1770, between Avda. In addition, you must show that you have sufficient financial means to support yourself without working. The required amount may vary depending on the city where you apply and on how your case is assessed.

There is also another option that allows you to live in Spain – having a European passport. Anyone who holds one can live, travel and work in Spain with complete freedom. This is the only way to live legally in the country without a work visa. However, if after 90 days you remain in the country, you must register in the Central Register of Foreigners (Registro Central de Extranjeros).

Therefore, for stays of more than 180 days you must also provide:

Criminal record certificate issued within the last three months by the competent authority of the country where you have lived during the 5 years prior to the application, with an apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Medical certificate issued within the last 6 months by a registered doctor, explicitly stating that the applicant “does not suffer from any of the diseases that may have serious repercussions for public health”. It must be legalised by the Ministry of Public Health or the Medical Association and bear an apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Up to this point, the most important part concerns the documents and bureaucracy. But we have also identified some additional points that we believe are important when making the decision to emigrate to Spain.

Although it is true that, as Latin Americans, and given the large number of descendants of Spaniards, many customs are similar, one very important aspect is that several different languages are spoken in Spain in addition to Castilian Spanish. This will be very important when choosing where to live.

It is also very important to research the job market, because if you have a higher education degree and are interested in working in your profession, you will have to get your qualification recognised (homologated) for it to be valid in Spain.

You should also know that, when it comes to studying, if you do not have a scholarship, university studies in Spain – both in private and public universities – are not free.

Before moving to another country, the most advisable thing is to be as organised as possible, especially regarding the documents you will bring with you. The most important point is that all your documents must be apostilled so that they are valid in other countries that are also signatories to the Hague Convention.

Another important point to keep in mind is that for all immigration procedures in Spain you need to book an appointment in advance.

Is it more expensive to live in Spain or Argentina?

In general, the first comparison people make is between the average salary in Spain (1,300 euros) and that in Argentina (39,000 pesos), and the difference in terms of the European currency is around 6 to 1.

As for housing, there are no major differences in the rent of a one-bedroom apartment either in the outskirts or in the city centre of both countries, since in both cases it represents around 40% and 55% of the average salary, respectively.

On the other hand, the rent for a three-bedroom apartment is much cheaper in Spain than in Argentina – about 30% lower depending on the area.

If we compare the price per square metre for buying a home in relation to salaries, in the Iberian Peninsula it is about 65% cheaper.

Regarding expenses such as electricity, gas or municipal taxes, these are about 25% cheaper, while the cost of internet service is roughly half.

In terms of transport, while in Argentina a mid-range car is equivalent to 63 monthly salaries, in Spain the equivalent is only 15. Public transport, however – whether taxi, bus, train or metro – is more expensive in Spain.

We also find a strong contrast when it comes to clothing, which is between 60% and 80% cheaper in Spain.

As for everyday shopping, it is much cheaper in Spain than in Argentina. For example, a simple supermarket shop in Argentina that includes fruit and vegetables, a kilo of meat, a soft drink, a bottle of wine and dairy products costs around 2,900 pesos, equivalent to 7.4% of the average salary; in Spain, the same shop would cost around 43 euros, i.e. about 3.3% of the average salary.

Beyond these figures, it must be borne in mind that there are significant differences in the cost of living between the different autonomous communities and their cities.

[74

post-445496","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-life-in-spain

How to Move to Spain from Argentina

<meta name="description" content="Key steps to move from Argentina to Spain.
