This type of residence allows individuals to live in Spain without the need to work or engage in economic activities. It is primarily designed for foreign nationals with consistent passive income or sufficient savings to cover their expenses without requiring employment. There is a common misconception that this residence is only for retirees, but this is not the case, as Spain\u2019s Foreigners\u2019 Regulations do not impose age restrictions or require retirement to apply for this permit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/alegria-realestate.com\/en\/service\/residence-permit-in-spain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This residence permit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not allow working in Spain, but it does permit opening a business, being its founder, and receiving income in the form of dividends. After the first renewal, it is possible to request a modification to obtain a residence permit with the right to work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Requirements for Obtaining a Non-Lucrative Residence Permit in Spain in 2025<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">List of requirements that each applicant must meet:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Not be a citizen of Spain, an EU member state, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nor be a family member of citizens of these countries. Additionally, there is an efficient private healthcare system, a wide range of insurance companies, and affordable insurance policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After five years of temporary residence, applicants can apply for <\/span><b>permanent residency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and after ten years, they can request <\/span><b>Spanish citizenship<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additional documents may be required depending on the specific Spanish Consulate where the application is submitted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Documents proving the source of income<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: property registry extracts, lease agreements, statutory documents, tax declarations, certificates from pension, investment, or other funds, also translated into Spanish.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medical insurance policy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with no coverage limitations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medical certificate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, translated into Spanish.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Documents proving housing availability in Spain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: for owned property, a notarial deed and a recent extract from the Property Registry (Nota Simple Informativa); for long-term rentals, a lease agreement and a recent extract from the Property Registry.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Color photographs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All foreign official documents must be <\/span><b>legalized<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This involves obtaining an apostille for documents issued in countries party to the 1961 Hague Convention or consular legalization for others. Translations must be certified at the consulate or by a <\/span><b>sworn translator (traductor jurado)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If applying for family members, a marriage certificate and birth certificates for children are required.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Procedure for Obtaining the Non-Lucrative Residence Permit in Spain in 2025<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The non-lucrative residence permit is processed through the Spanish Consulate or Embassy in the applicant\u2019s country of habitual residence. The initial residence card is issued for <\/span><b>1 year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Renewals are requested directly in Spain through the Immigration Office (Extranjer\u00eda), without needing to visit the consulate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case of a refusal, the applicant receives a written notification stating the reasons for the decision.
