Villajoyosa is the capital of the Marina Baja region. According to the Spanish Statistical Office, in 2024 Villajoyosa had 36 891 inhabitants.
\nVillajoyosa borders municipalities such as Relieu, Aguas de Busot, Campello, Finestrat, Orcheta and Benidorm. The Amador\u00edo River passes through the city centre of Villajoyosa.

Villajoyosa: weather<\/h2>\n

Villajoyosa has a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. It never snows in this area and it rarely rains. The bathing season in Villajoyosa lasts from June to September, although some years it may begin in April and end in November. In any case, you can sunbathe here most of the year, since in Villajoyosa it is sunny more than 300 days a year.<\/p>\n

Former settlers lived in the place where Villajoyosa is today, still in the Bronze Age, and where the historic centre of the city is today, an Iberian settlement existed. In the era of Roman rule, in the area of \u200b\u200bthe modern municipality of Villajoyosa, there was a city called Alon\u00eds or Alonis. At that time, this city experienced a great economic recovery. Today it is not known exactly where it was, but most likely its centre coincided with the centre of modern Villajoyosa (Plaza de la Generalitat, Calle Col\u00f3n, historic centre).<\/p>\n

In the Middle Ages, the area of \u200b\u200bmodern Villajoyosa was depopulated, however, there were small settlements in the surroundings of the city, such as the Torres settlement, mentioned in the book \u201cLlibre dels Feits de Jaime I\u201d. The Christian city baptized as Villajoyosa, was founded in 1300 by Bernardo de Sarri\u00e1, admiral of Jaime II of Aragon, with a strategic purpose: to protect the coast from Muslim attacks. For centuries, the city was owned by several noble families.<\/p>\n

During the 16th century, Villajoyosa played an important role in the protection of the coast of Alicante, from attacks of Berber pirates. Because of this, in the middle of the century, by order of Philip II, new walls were erected replacing the old ones. The remains of this wall have survived to this day. The city’s defence system also included watchtowers and garden towers, adjacent to the farms. In the same century, the construction of the fortress-church of Our Lady of the Assumption, in Gothic style, was completed. At the end of the 17th century, the threat of pirate attacks ceased to exist, and Villajoyosa began to grow outside the fortress wall.<\/p>\n

In 1911, Villajoyosa received the city status.
\nTraditionally, Villajoyosa’s economy was mainly based on fishing, while today the main industries are: tourism and chocolate production.<\/p>\n

An incredible olive tree, with an approximate age of 1,400 years. It is considered as the oldest tree in the province of Alicante, and one of the oldest in the Valencian Community.<\/p>\n
