San Miguel de Salinas heeft een uniek, heilzaam microklimaat dankzij de gunstige ligging nabij de zoutvlakte van Torrevieja. De eerste vermeldingen van nederzettingen op de locatie van de gemeente dateren uit de tijd van het Romeinse Rijk. Archeologische opgravingen bevestigen echter ook de aanwezigheid van Arabieren en Iberi\u00ebrs op deze plaatsen. Bevestiging dat er destijds georganiseerde nederzettingen waren, is echter nog niet gevonden. Daarom kan worden aangenomen dat dit afzonderlijke woningen waren van boeren en veehouders die deze vruchtbare gronden bewerkten. Aan het einde van de 16e eeuw begonnen de bewoners van de nederzetting voor het eerst woningen te bouwen voor permanente bewoning om hun bezittingen te ontwikkelen. Tegenwoordig vormen deze huizen het oude stadscentrum van San Miguel de Salinas. Aan het begin van de 18e eeuw verscheen hier een eigen kapel, die ongeveer 90 jaar standhield en vervolgens werd verwoest door de bouwvalligheid van het gebouw.
