De regio Valencia telt een flink aantal middeleeuwse steden die sindsdien vrijwel hun oorspronkelijke uiterlijk hebben behouden. Minstens vijf daarvan zijn een absolute aanrader, en de vrije tijd tijdens de komende feestdagen kan hiervoor worden gebruikt.<\/p>\n

Culla, Castellon<\/h2>\n

In de provincie Castell\u00f3n ligt een van de meest charmante hoekjes van de regio Valencia: Culla, met slechts 500 inwoners. De belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden van dit stadje met geplaveide huizen en straten zijn de ru\u00efnes van het Moorse kasteel (Castillo \u00c1rabe), de voormalige gevangenis Granero del Comendador (Granero del Comendador) en de lokale parochiekerk (Iglesia Parroquial del Salvador). Hier kunt u de typische streekgerechten "olla del maestrat" of "hemelse coca" proeven. Voor liefhebbers van actieve recreatie zijn er diverse wandelpaden in het nabijgelegen natuurpark Parc Miner del Maestrat.<\/p>\n

Morella, Castellon<\/h2>\n

Een van de mooiste middeleeuwse kastelen in de provincie Castell\u00f3n bevindt zich in Morella, een stadje met ongeveer 2500 inwoners. Dit kasteel ligt op een berg van meer dan 1000 meter hoog, aan de voet waarvan de stad is gebouwd. Hier zijn, naast het fort (Castell de Morella) met een ongeveer 2500 meter lange muur, de gotische kerk van Santa Maria la Mayor (Iglesia Arciprestal Santa Mar\u00eda La Mayor), de Pardals-toren (Torre Pardals), het aquaduct van Santa Ll\u00facia (Aqueducte de Santa Ll\u00facia), het paradeterrein en de prehistorische grotten van Morella la Vella (Cuevas Prehist\u00f3ricas De Morella La Vella) bewaard gebleven. De populairste gerechten van Morella zijn "ternasco" (lamsfilet), "gallina trufada" (gevulde kip) en de lokaal gemaakte croquetas – "croquetas morellanas".

X\u00e0tiva, Valencia<\/h2>\n

Naar provinciale maatstaven wordt X\u00e0tiva, met een bevolking van ongeveer 30.000 inwoners, beschouwd als een grote stad met een groot aantal bezienswaardigheden. De belangrijkste is het kasteel dat boven de stad uittorent, met twee forten, waarvan er \u00e9\u00e9n werd gebouwd tijdens de islamitische heerschappij en de andere na de verdrijving van de Moren. Het historische centrum is het meest direct verbonden met de pauselijke dynastie van Borgia – met name het huis van Rodrigo Borgia (Casa Natalicia de Alejandro VI), de Kathedraal van de Tenhemelopneming van de Maagd Maria (Bas\u00edlica Santa Mar\u00eda), het Museum voor Kerkelijke Kunst (Museo Colegial) en de Iglesia de San Francisco, waar voorheen de familiecrypte was gevestigd, bevinden zich hier.<\/p>\n

Chulilla, Valencia<\/h2>\n

Naast de middeleeuwse sfeer wordt het historische centrum van Chulilla, waar iets meer dan 700 mensen permanent wonen, gekenmerkt door een adembenemend berglandschap. Het is niet voor niets een van de beste plekken in de regio Valencia om te wandelen en rotsklimmen. De beroemdste toeristische route (Ruta de los Puentes Colgantes) loopt langs hangbruggen, waarvan sommige meer dan 15 meter hoog zijn, en zelfs kinderen kunnen eroverheen lopen. In de zomermaanden zwemmen veel toeristen in het bergmeer Charco Azul, en in de winter kun je het water met zijn bijzondere kleur bewonderen.<\/p>\n

Guadalest, Alicante<\/h2>\n

Het ongelooflijk mooie meer ligt ook naast de vestingstad Guadalest, gelegen op een rotsachtige richel op 595 meter hoogte. Het aantal toeristen dat hier dagelijks komt, overtreft ruimschoots de lokale bevolking (250 inwoners), wat mede te danken is aan de nabijheid van Benidorm (ongeveer 25 km). De belangrijkste architectonische schat is het kasteel van San Jos\u00e9 (Castillo de San Jos\u00e9), waardoor Guadalest in 1974 werd uitgeroepen tot historisch en artistiek monument. Tegelijkertijd wordt het vaak een "museumstad" genoemd vanwege de overvloed aan culturele instellingen, waarvan er meer dan tien zijn.
