De Europese Unie, die zekerheid wil brengen in de situatie van de meer dan 4 miljoen Oekra\u00efense vluchtelingen die momenteel op haar grondgebied verblijven, heeft besloten de tijdelijke beschermingsregeling voor hen te verlengen. Deze is van kracht van 4 maart 2024 tot 4 maart 2025. De regeling trad in werking op 4 maart 2022, enkele dagen nadat de Russische strijdkrachten een grootschalige invasie van Oekra\u00efne hadden gelanceerd, en werd automatisch met een jaar verlengd. De regeling biedt onmiddellijke collectieve bescherming aan ontheemden die niet naar hun land van herkomst kunnen terugkeren en stelt hen in staat te profiteren van overeengekomen rechten in alle EU-lidstaten. Deze rechten vari\u00ebren van langdurig verblijf en toegang tot de arbeidsmarkt en huisvesting tot gezondheidszorg, sociale bijstand en gegarandeerd onderwijs voor kinderen. De waarnemend Spaanse minister van Binnenlandse Zaken, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, benadrukte het belang van de nieuwe maatregel: "De EU zal het Oekra\u00efense volk steunen zolang dat nodig is. De verlenging van de beschermingsstatus geeft vertrouwen aan de meer dan 4 miljoen vluchtelingen die hier onderdak hebben gevonden… We hebben de tijd om de situatie te bestuderen en de juiste vorm van bescherming voor Oekra\u00efense burgers te ontwikkelen. We hopen echter dat verdere steun niet nodig zal zijn, dat de situatie niet zal verslechteren en dat iedereen zo snel mogelijk naar zijn land kan terugkeren en in vrede en veiligheid kan leven." Op dit moment is er slechts sprake van een politiek akkoord: de Raad van Europa moet het besluit tot verlenging van de tijdelijke bescherming nog formeel goedkeuren.
