Events in Elche
8–10 May. Musical “Sonrisas y lágrimas”
The Gran Teatro of Elche will stage the musical “Sonrisas y lágrimas”, set in Salzburg, Austria, in 1938. Maria Rainer is a young novice at Nonnberg Abbey whose free spirit and passion for music clash with the strict rules of monastic life. Her constant escapes to the nearby mountains puzzle the other nuns, who wonder whether Maria is truly destined to become one of them.
To help her find her path, the Mother Abbess decides to send Maria to work as governess to the seven children of Captain Georg von Trapp, a former officer of the Austro-Hungarian Navy who has recently become a widower. Arriving at her new home, Maria discovers that the captain has become a withdrawn man after the death of his wife, and that the children are being raised under a regime of strict discipline that leaves no room for fun. However, thanks to her infectious joy and passion for music, Maria not only wins the children’s hearts, filling the house with laughter, songs and love, but also begins to awaken feelings for the captain that make her question her future in the abbey…
The new Theatre Properties production of “Sonrisas y lágrimas” impresses not only with its moving story and the unforgettable music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, but also with its magnificent sets, which transport the audience to Austria in the 1930s. Every set is carefully designed to envelop viewers in a classic atmosphere – from the abbey to the von Trapp villa and the majestic Alps.
- Venue: Gran Teatro of Elche.
- Time: 20:00 (Friday), 17:00 and 20:30 (Saturday), 17:00 (Sunday).
