1–4 October. Exhibition «El oro y el universo. Saberes indígenas de Colombia»
Until 2 May 2027, the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ) is hosting the major international exhibition «El oro y el universo. Saberes indígenas de Colombia» («Gold and the Universe. Indigenous Knowledge of Colombia»). Thanks to historical cooperation with the Gold Museum in Bogotá and the University of Cambridge, a unique collection of almost 300 sacred objects, masks and breastplates has arrived in Spain, offering a completely different perspective on the myth of El Dorado.
The exhibition includes 291 archaeological objects selected especially for the exhibition, including around 157 gold pieces, as well as works by contemporary indigenous communities. Many of these objects are being displayed in Spain for the first time. Particularly striking are hybrid beings such as the famous «bat people» and «shamans in flight». These artefacts are exceptional not only because of their design and technical craftsmanship, but also because of the important role they played in maintaining the balance of the world. Ceramic and stone pieces are equally important, including a wide variety of representations of plants and animals, some of which are now endangered because of the destruction of their ecosystems.
Opening hours – 10:00 to 21:00 (Tuesday–Saturday), 10:00 to 14:00 (Sunday and public holidays). Tickets – €6.
