Here, in southern Europe, Sotogrande was founded by the Philippine industrialist couple, Joseph McMicking and Mercedes Zóbel, with assistance from their nephews, Jaime Zóbel and Enrique Zóbel. They were dreaming about establishing a city reminiscent of Palm Springs in sunny California, USA.
In 1962, McMickings were so inspired by the picturesque coastal scenery that decided to purchase five adjacent land plots with the vision of crafting a lavish Mediterranean residential development.
In May 2006, The Times highlighted Sotogrande as having the priciest homes in Europe. This area can boast several artificial lakes and five golf courses, including the Valderrama Golf Club founded by Jaime Ortiz-Patiño and the San Roque course. Also, in 1988, there was founded a local port.
