Every end of the year, the wine world awaits its ‘Oscars’ with anticipation; the prestigious ranking of the 100 best wines in the world is published in full by the American magazine Wine Spectator. On this occasion, the top 10 places on the list have been disclosed, headed by a Spanish label: Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2010 from the Marqués de Murrieta winery.

And why this wine from the centennial Rioja winery, chaired by Vicente Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga, has been chosen as the best among the more than 11,000 tasted? “For its history, its character and for reminding us of the value of commitment, effort and perseverance,” explained the statement issued by the organisation.

“We are proud that we have finally achieved this, a pride for us, for La Rioja and for Spain. We found out on Friday night, through a video with a very Oscar-like staging. In this video, Thomas Matthews, executive editor of Wine Spectator, says something very beautiful: that this has been anaward for a project, for a way of understanding wine, for a career and for the image of a winery around the world,” says José Carlos García, communications director of this Rioja winery.

And he continues: “Recognition helps us to work twice as hard”, he adds, “It’s the perfect match of time. What it does is respect time and this, in turn, helps it, making it increasingly expressive and wise. A unique wine, which is only made with the most exceptional vintages. Thus, we have had Castillo Ygay from 2007, 2009 and 2010, which has been declared the best in the world, and it may take us – or not – one, three or five years to bring it out again, because we are obsessed with the search for perfection, for excellence, something that when it is not achieved is frustrating”, finishes García.
