The options for renting a holiday home on the beach this summer are dwindling and there is less and less supply available. In fact, holiday homes on the Spanish coast have an expected occupancy level for August of 77.7%, which means that they have already surpassed the occupancy of August 2020, which was 77.3%. This is the result of a study by Rentalia, Idealista’s holiday platform. In this study, the occupancy calendars of apartments and holiday homes located on the Spanish coasts have been analysed.

12 Spanish coasts today have a higher occupancy level than they had in 2020. The coast of Valencia with a growth of 6.3 percentage points is in the lead, followed by the coast of Majorca (5.7 points), the coast of Malaga (4.9 points), the coast of Menorca (3.7 points) and the coast of Cadiz (3 points). Below 3 points are the coasts of Girona (2.2 points), Tarragona (2 points), Alicante (1.6 points), Barcelona (1.5 points), Murcia (1 point), Castellón (0.7 points) and Huelva (0.2 points).
Some coasts, although they still have a lower occupancy than last year, it seems that in the coming weeks they will reach the same level as in 2020, these are: Almeria (-0.9 points), Tenerife (-1.9 points), Cantabria (-3.6 points), A Coruña (-5.5 points) and Pontevedra (-5.9 points).

Finally, the rest of the coasts have lower occupancy levels than those achieved last summer, with Fuerteventura (-30.6 points) in the lead, followed by Lanzarote (-20.1 points), Gran Canaria (-12.7 points) and Asturias (-10.4 points).
For Almudena Ucha, Director of Rentalia, “although in August 2020 international tourism decreased and Spanish travellers opted mainly for less crowded destinations such as Asturias, Cantabria and A Coruña, for this month of August the boom of classic summer destinations is back. The good vaccination rates are encouraging tourists, both national and international, to book their holidays with haste and it would not be surprising to see some Spanish coasts with pre-pandemic levels of occupancy”.

Mallorca, with 90% of its holiday homes already booked, leads the list of coasts with the highest occupancy levels, followed by the coasts of Menorca (87.9%), Cadiz (86.2%), Cantabria (85.5%) and Alicante (85%). Below 85% are the coasts of Asturias (82.7%), Almeria (80%), A Coruña (79.8%), Tarragona (79.4%), Girona (79.1%), Malaga (77.4%), Valencia (74.6%), Pontevedra (73.5%) and Murcia (72.3%).

Travellers who have not yet booked their holidays will find greater availability in destinations with lower occupancy levels, such as the coast of Gran Canaria (47.1%), Fuerteventura (49.2%) and the coasts of Tenerife (56.9%) and Huelva (57%). Likewise, holiday homes can still be found on the coasts of Castellón (60%), Lanzarote (64.5%) and Barcelona (65%).
