Asturias remains one of the most convenient destinations for a short nature break over the May long weekend. Among the walking options are Senderos Azules routes, recognised for their environmental value, accessibility and connection with natural and cultural heritage.
In 2026, Spain has 194 Senderos Azules routes, and Asturias has 10 trails with this distinction. For those looking for a calm plan for a few hours, three routes are especially suitable: Senda peatonal de la Concha de Artedo in Cudillero, Ruta Cascada del Nonaya in Salas and Sendero Azul Marino Tapiego in Tapia de Casariego.
Concha de Artedo: a short walk by the sea
Senda peatonal de la Concha de Artedo is located in Cudillero and runs through the area around Concha de Artedo beach. This is a simple route of about 700 metres, which can be completed in approximately 15 minutes.
The trail runs along the Uncín River and passes through natural surroundings with alder groves and eucalyptus trees. The route is suitable for those who want to combine an easy walk with coastal views and time by the beach.
Cascada del Nonaya: forest, river and waterfall
Ruta Cascada del Nonaya in Salas is another option for a May break. The route is 3.584 kilometres long, takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes and is considered easy.
The trail starts by the albergue in Salas and follows a section of the Camino de Santiago. Along the way, you can see old mines, stone bridges, Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor and Torre de Valdés Salas.
The main point of the route is Cascada del Nonaya. The road to the waterfall runs along the Nonaya River through a green forest landscape, making the route especially suitable for a spring walk.
Sendero Azul Marino Tapiego: port, lighthouse and beaches
Sendero Azul Marino Tapiego is located in Tapia de Casariego. This is an easy route of 1.430 kilometres, which can be completed in approximately 25 minutes.
The route starts in the 18th-century port, passes near the Tapia de Casariego lighthouse, La Guardia viewpoint and the Rocín pier. The trail then continues along the coastal promenade towards the beaches of Ribeiría, As Furadas, Maleguas and Anguileiro.
This route is suitable for those who want to spend a day by the sea, walk along the coast and see one of the most recognisable maritime areas of western Asturias.
Why these routes are suitable for a short break
All three routes have an easy level of difficulty and do not require serious physical preparation. They allow you to see different sides of Asturias in a short time: the coast, forest trails, a river, a waterfall, historical places and fishing villages.
For the walk, it is worth choosing comfortable shoes, taking water and keeping in mind the changeable weather in northern Spain. It is also important to keep the routes clean and not leave the marked trails, so as not to harm the natural environment.
