Torrevieja is entering the final phase of one of the most ambitious urban planning and tourism projects in its recent history: the comprehensive transformation of the port area and the construction of the new «Paseo del Mar» leisure centre – a strategic initiative with total investment set to exceed 100 million euros. Of the total amount, approximately 61 million euros will come from private investment, while the city council has allocated around 40 million euros for urban modernisation and the restoration of public spaces.
What will change in the port area
The project will completely transform the port area through new pedestrian promenades, green areas, cultural spaces, leisure zones and a significant improvement in the connection between the city and the sea. One of the most iconic elements is the restoration of the historic Mínguez pier, where comprehensive works are currently being carried out to restore its original appearance and turn it into a new urban and tourist space.
The project includes a partially submerged platform that will recall the historic configuration of the pier, as well as a large illuminated decorative fountain equipped with more than 70 water jets and dynamic visual effects. In addition, a museum and educational space using digital technologies will be created, allowing visitors to learn about the history of Torrevieja’s port and fishing industry.
New public spaces and landscaping
Among the public spaces, a large square of more than 4,600 sq. m. in the Customs Post area stands out, designed using materials in line with Torrevieja’s salt-making traditions. Next to the fishing quay, a new 170-metre pedestrian promenade will be created, with children’s playgrounds and leisure areas designed for the convenience of residents.
The project includes more than 2,200 sq. m. of new landscaped areas, more than 200 trees and 3,000 shrubs. It also provides for the improvement of the tree cover on Paseo de la Libertad.
The new promenade will be decorated with an impressive central fountain with 43 compact jets, illuminated with multicoloured LED technology. The height of the main water jet will reach five metres, making the fountain one of the main visual elements of the new urban space.
Exhibition area and opening dates
Another key area will be the reconstruction of around 18,900 sq. m. intended for a new exhibition area and multifunctional esplanade, ready to host concerts, cultural events and other activities throughout the year. Another new elevated structure will connect the port with the Levante promenade and will serve as a viewpoint overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
The aim of the project is to prioritise pedestrians on the port promenade by reducing vehicle traffic and creating more accessible and comfortable spaces for residents and visitors to the city. Part of this new area is expected to open to the public this summer, while the full connection with Paseo Juan Aparicio will be completed by the end of the year.
The new Paseo del Mar leisure centre is expected to open between late May and early June. The complex will include 27 commercial premises, restaurants, family entertainment, latest-generation cinemas, more than 4,000 sq. m. of green areas, spacious pedestrian zones and common areas.
