Applying for a student visa to Spain

The new Immigration Regulation introduces significant changes to the procedure for applying for a student visa in Spain.

1. Regardless of what you plan to study—pursuing a bachelor’s degree, a master’s, or learning Spanish—you must submit your documents 2 months before the start of your studies. If the application is submitted within a shorter timeframe, this must be justified (for example, a delay in documents from the educational institution).
2. Students of language courses have lost the possibility to apply for a student stay authorization from within Spain. They must now apply strictly through the Consulate of Spain in their country of residence. In addition, language-course students can no longer relocate with their family.
3. Only university students can now apply for a student stay authorization directly from within Spain and bring their family members also from Spain, provided the application is submitted 2 months before studies begin and the student has at least 60 days of legal Schengen stay remaining.
4. “Children as students” – this category no longer exists. Children join their parents: university students or residence permit holders/applicants.

The Consulate’s processing time can be up to 90 days, though in practice it is about one month. In Spain, processing takes longer; in some provinces, several months.

• The cost of obtaining a Spanish student visa with Alegria is €600 for an adult and €200 for each family member. We work on a 100% prepayment basis.
• The cost of extending a student visa is €360 for an adult and €180 for a child accompanied by an adult.
