Obtaining an NIE in Spain

Obtaining an NIE in Spain (Número de Identidad de Extranjero – Foreigner Identification Number) is required in the following cases:

• purchase of real estate,

• obtaining a residence permit,

• carrying out any economic transactions in Spain.

Time frame for obtaining an NIE in Spain

By law, the NIE application process in Spain should not exceed 5 days. For a property purchase, you can obtain an NIE at the Oficinas de Extranjeros at the police station. The number is assigned on the spot. You receive a document with the tax number, which is assigned permanently.

The NIE service in Spain includes:

• arranging the execution of a notarial deed,

• booking an appointment with the police,

• accompaniment to obtain the foreigner’s number.
