The son of the president of the United States, Donald Trump Jr., made a short trip to southern Spain in mid-November. His plane landed at Malaga–Costa del Sol International Airport, from where the motorcade headed along the AP-7 motorway towards Gibraltar. The Spanish National Police escorted the convoy and had been informed in advance about the visit of the high-profile guest.
According to the newspaper Europa Sur, in Gibraltar Trump Jr. spent around three and a half hours in the Madison Building business complex. There he met with lawyer Jaime Levy, a partner at major law firm Hassans and a close friend of Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, as well as with entrepreneur Christian Ryan. Together with American investor Konstantin Sokolov, Ryan is promoting a large data-centre project in the North Mole area, next to the port.
The project in question is Pelagos Data Centres – a facility with a capacity of up to 250 MW that is expected to become a strategic digital hub for Europe. The volume of private investment is estimated at around €2.1 billion, and the launch of the first phase is scheduled for the end of 2027. By 2033 the complex is planned to reach full capacity. For Gibraltar this is a record-breaking private project which, according to the authorities, will create hundreds of jobs and strengthen the territory’s position as a technology hub.
Donald Trump Jr.’s visit to the Costa del Sol was not limited to Gibraltar. According to local media, his trip took the form of a short but busy business and private visit to the coast, including a stop in Marbella – one of the most prestigious resorts in the province of Malaga. The fact that a representative of such a well-known business dynasty chose Malaga and the Costa del Sol once again underlines the region’s status as a place where high-end tourism, international business and technological projects come together.
Malaga has long been considered one of the most dynamic cities in Spain. It is a modern metropolis and at the same time the capital of the Costa del Sol – a coastline that consistently attracts affluent tourists and investors from all over the world.
