October 6, 2025 — it was announced that Torrevieja has secured €8,562,418 from the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) under the Planes de Actuación Integrados scheme for local authorities. The decision was made by the Directorate for European Funds Management at Spain’s Ministry of Finance.

Torrevieja is among three municipalities in the Valencian Community (along with Valencia and Castellón de la Plana) to receive the maximum allocation. Of the 42 municipalities in the region, only 15 obtained support.

Main investment directions

The funds are allocated for implementing the Integrated Action Plan (PAI), whose goal is the regeneration of the southern part of the city centre, specifically in the Acequión and San Roque districts. The plan includes:

  • Reconstruction of the Eras de la Sal area — modernising the Sea and Salt Museum, creating a new Salt Promenade, and introducing technologies to boost ecological appeal and tourism.
  • Revitalisation of the San Roque centre — transforming it into a modern sociocultural space to strengthen community life and associations.
  • Renaturalisation of school yards at CEIP Acequión and Inmaculada — landscaping and community engagement in the renewal process.

Green corridors & urban landscaping

All project sites will be linked by a new green corridor and bicycle paths, stretching from the CV-95 road to the Doña Sinforosa Park and the Eras de la Sal area. This approach aims to connect cultural and educational centres with recreational zones, creating a pleasant and safe space for residents and visitors.

Project governance

The coordination is led by the European Funds Department of Torrevieja’s City Hall, together with municipal departments of urban development, tourism, education, culture, innovation, ecology, and social policy. This body was established in June 2024 to attract and manage European funds, and is now responsible for executing the Integrated Action Plan.

Impact for the city

The FEDER 2021–2027 programme is focused on creating sustainable, ecological, and digital cities. For Torrevieja, this grant represents the biggest investment in its urban landscape in recent years. The project will help diversify the local economy, enhance urban quality of life, and boost the municipality’s tourist appeal.
