It’s been 2 years since the Spanish government announced its plan to eliminate tolls on some of the country’s toll highways. The initiative, which began in 2018, last until 2021. The first motorway, which passed into ownership of the state and became free, was Autopistadel Norte in 2018.
Starting January 1, 2020, the toll on one section of the AP-7 highway and on the AP-4 highway completely was canceled. In less than a year, two more sections of AP-7 and the AP-2 highway completely will be free.
Former toll roads that have already been free:
AP-1, or Autopistadel Norte, between the cities of Armiñón (Vitoria) and Burgos has been free of charge since December 1, 2018.
- AP-4 between Seville and Cadiz has been free of charge since January 1, 2020.
- AP-7 between Alicante and Tarragona has been free of charge since January 1, 2020.
Total – 467 km.
Toll roads that will be free in less than a year
September 1, 2021 – the date on which road tolls will be abolished:
- The AP-7 section between Tarragona and La Jonquera (Girona).
- The AP-7 section between Montmelo and El Papiol.
- The AP-2 section between Zaragoza and El Vendrel (Tarragona).
Total – 470 km.
