Madrid’s Metro is set to undergo its largest expansion in the coming years. Under the new project, the network will be extended by 32 kilometres towards Las Tablas, Móstoles and Leganés.
Line 10 extension to Móstoles
In Móstoles, Line 10 will be extended by 6.5 km from Puerta del Sur, with at least six new stations. According to the government of the Community of Madrid, around €1.05 billion will be allocated to the project, which will connect the municipality to one of the main Metro lines used by 300,000 passengers every day.
The extension will provide new travel options and a more direct connection with Madrid and the rest of the public transport network. According to the timetable, studies and project planning are scheduled for 2027–2029, while construction work will take place between 2030 and 2034.
Line 11 extension in Leganés
In Leganés, the Directorate General for Infrastructure of the Department of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure will study the possibility of extending Line 11 from La Fortuna to Poza del Agua, advancing the development of the future major diagonal route of the Madrid Metro. This will connect several municipalities and districts and provide more direct routes between different parts of the Community of Madrid. Study work is expected to begin in September this year through amendments to the existing contract.
Line 1 to be extended to Las Tablas
In addition, an extension of Line 1 to Las Tablas has been announced, involving the construction of a new tunnel approximately 1.5 km long and up to two new stations. The regional government estimates the investment at around €150 million. Studies and project development are planned for 2027–2028, with construction work scheduled for 2030–2032.
Light rail extension in Boadilla del Monte
These initiatives also include the extension of light rail Line 3 to Valenoso in Boadilla del Monte. The project comprises 1.5 km of double track, two surface stops and a terminus. The infrastructure construction budget will amount to €25 million, providing access to public transport in a rapidly developing area of the municipality. To implement the extension, the terms of the existing concession agreement will need to be adapted to the new route and increased passenger volumes; according to preliminary estimates, this process will take around one year.
