History and cultural heritage of Sant Joan d’Alacant
Many Muslim-era toponyms survive here. The first written mention dates to 1315. Until the early 20th century the town was simply “San Juan”; “de Alicante” was added in 1916.
The Huerta’s irrigation canals, defensive towers and chapels, estates and manor houses shaped the landscape from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century. The towers served as an early-warning system against Barbary pirates; four remain in Sant Joan — Ansaldo, La Cadena, Salafranca and Bonanza.
The famous fondillón (over-ripe Monastrell wine) originated and was produced here; after the phylloxera epidemic production moved to Vinalopó.
The 20th century brought a building boom and a shift toward tourism, services, education and healthcare, alongside heritage restoration.

Main attractions of Sant Joan d’Alacant
Church of San Juan Bautista, the old center, the Huerta towers and estates are the key highlights. Next to the church on Plaza Maisonnave you’ll find the Partidor del Toril — a 15th-century water-distribution mechanism.
Chapels from the 16th–18th centuries survive: San Roque, Our Lady of Loreto, Saint Anne and Calvary. In 1963 a coin hoard was discovered, now in the Archaeological Museum of Alicante Province. The Pedro José estate preserves a Civil-War-era air-raid shelter.
Local gastronomy
Three pillars: fondillón, rice, and seasonal fruit and vegetables. Traditional dishes: arroz a la alicantina, arroz con cebolla, olleta, putxero amb tarongetes, arroz con morena, borreta con bacalao, pastel de pescado. Almonds dominate desserts.
Nature and parks of Sant Joan d’Alacant
